Why Is My AC Freezing Up?

Ice on your air conditioner almost always traces back to one of two things: not enough warm air moving across the indoor coil, or low refrigerant. In a humid DMV summer there's plenty of moisture to freeze, so a coil that drops below 32°F ices over fast — and a frozen system can't cool your home. The good news: the most common cause is a simple airflow problem.
Why does an air conditioner freeze up?
Your AC cools by passing warm indoor air over a cold evaporator coil. That balance depends on a steady stream of warm air and a correct refrigerant charge. Take away either one and the coil keeps getting colder than designed; the humidity condensing on it then freezes instead of draining away. Once ice forms it blocks airflow even more, so the problem snowballs until the system is wrapped in frost and blowing warm — which is one of the top reasons an AC blows warm air.
What restricts the airflow?
Anything that starves the coil of warm air can freeze it:

- Closed or blocked vents — too many shut registers reduce the airflow the system needs.
- A dirty evaporator coil — grime insulates the coil and chokes airflow over time.

Could low refrigerant be the cause?
When the R-410A charge is low — almost always from a leak, since refrigerant doesn't get used up — pressure in the coil drops, the coil runs colder than intended, and it freezes. Why do humid DMV summers make it worse?
Maryland, D.C., and Virginia summers are famously muggy, and that humidity is fuel for ice. The more moisture in the air, the more water condenses on the coil — so a borderline airflow or charge problem that might limp along in a dry climate freezes solid here. It's also why a frozen coil so often shows up alongside clammy, sticky indoor air right before it quits.
The short version
Ice means airflow or refrigerant. Turn the system OFF and run just the fan to thaw it, then replace the filter and open your vents. If it refreezes, suspect a refrigerant leak or a dirty coil and call a pro — never chip the ice off, and never add refrigerant yourself.
How do I safely thaw a frozen AC?
Don't try to cool through the ice, and never chip at it — you can puncture the coil. Instead:
- Set the thermostat to OFF for cooling, then switch the fan to ON to blow room air across the coil and melt the ice (it can take a few hours).
- Replace the air filter while you wait.
- Once fully thawed and dry, set it back to COOL and watch it. If it cools normally, the filter was likely the culprit.
- If it freezes again, shut it down and book a service call.
