Do Heat Pumps Work in DMV Winters?

Updated June 2026 · 5 min read

Yes — a properly sized, modern cold-climate heat pump will heat your home through a full Maryland, D.C., or Northern Virginia winter, cold snaps included. Today's inverter-driven systems pull usable heat out of the outdoor air well below freezing, and on the rare brutal day, backup heat steps in so you never feel a gap.

Do heat pumps really work when it's cold outside?

They do, and the reason surprises a lot of homeowners: even cold air holds heat. A heat pump doesn't burn fuel to create warmth — it moves existing heat from outside to inside. There's still plenty of energy to capture at 30°F, 20°F, even lower. That matters here because the DMV's winter design temperature is moderate; most cold mornings sit in the 20s and 30s, and our truly bitter days are few. That's squarely within a quality heat pump's wheelhouse.

What makes a cold-climate heat pump different?

The leap forward is the variable-speed (inverter) compressor. Instead of switching fully on and off, it ramps smoothly, squeezing more heat from frigid air and holding a steady indoor temperature. Cold-climate models are engineered to deliver strong, rated capacity at low outdoor temperatures rather than fading the moment the thermometer drops.

When you compare equipment, the heating-efficiency number to watch is HSPF2 — the higher it is, the more heat you get per unit of electricity across the season. Logan Mechanical installs cold-climate, inverter-driven systems from Trane and Mitsubishi Electric, the two brands we trust to perform in our winters.

What is the defrost cycle — and should I worry about it?

On cold, damp days a little frost builds on the outdoor coil. Periodically the system runs a short defrost cycle: it briefly reverses into cooling mode to warm the outdoor coil and melt that frost, then returns to heating. You may see steam rising off the unit and feel the indoor air go neutral for a few minutes. That's normal and automatic — not a breakdown. What isn't normal is the outdoor unit staying caked in ice for hours; that's a service call.

When does backup or auxiliary heat kick in?

For the small number of days that dip below a heat pump's comfortable range, your system has a plan:

  • Auxiliary electric heat. Most all-electric installs include resistance heat strips in the air handler that supplement the heat pump on the coldest mornings.
  • A gas furnace (dual-fuel). If you already have gas, pairing the heat pump with a furnace in a dual-fuel setup lets the system automatically switch to gas heat for extreme cold — often the most cost-effective path in the DMV.

Either way, the heat pump does the heavy lifting for most of the season and backup heat simply covers the extremes. Still deciding between systems? Our AC vs. heat pump guide lays out the trade-offs.

The short version

Modern cold-climate heat pumps heat DMV homes all winter by moving heat, not making it. A short defrost cycle is normal, and auxiliary electric or dual-fuel gas heat covers the few brutally cold days. Get the sizing right and you'll stay comfortable straight through March.

Why does correct sizing matter so much here?

A heat pump is only as good as its installation. An oversized unit short-cycles and leaves our muggy shoulder-season air clammy; an undersized one leans too hard on backup heat and runs up your bill. The fix is a real Manual J load calculation — measuring your home's insulation, windows, and air leakage — not a guess from square footage. It's exactly why our free in-home estimates include that calculation before we ever quote a system. See the full picture on our heat pump services page.
