MERV — Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value — is the 1-to-16 scale that tells you how much a filter actually traps, from basic MERV 1–4 up to high-efficiency MERV 13–16. A higher number catches finer particles, but pushing it too high can choke your system's airflow. The right filter balances cleaner air against the air your blower can move — and you change it on schedule. Why your air filter matters more than you think
It's the simplest task in HVAC and the most overlooked. A filter traps dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and other particles before they recirculate through your home — which matters most for households with allergy sufferers or young children. It also protects the equipment itself: when a filter clogs, your system has to fight for air, so it runs longer, uses more energy, drives up your bill, and wears out faster. A clean filter is a small price next to a major repair — and a more efficient system is a greener one.
What does MERV mean?
MERV is the industry standard for rating how effectively a filter removes particles from the air passing through it. The scale runs 1 to 16 for residential equipment; the higher the number, the smaller the particles the filter captures. (Numbers above 16 exist for hospitals and cleanrooms — far more restrictive than a home system is built to handle.) Crucially, MERV measures the filter's ability to catch particles, not how much air it lets through — and those two things pull in opposite directions, which is the whole trick to choosing well.
What does each MERV level catch?
Here's roughly what you get as you climb the scale:
- MERV 1–4: bare-minimum protection for the equipment — catches lint and large dust, little else. Common in cheap fiberglass filters.
- MERV 5–8: a solid baseline for most homes — traps dust, pollen, mold spores, and lint. MERV 8 is a sensible default for many DMV households.
- MERV 9–12: noticeably better for allergies — captures finer dust, pet dander, and some smoke and fine particles.
- MERV 13–16: the highest residential tier — grabs very fine particles, smoke, and many bacteria. Excellent if your system can handle the resistance.

Can a filter be too high a MERV?
Yes — and this is the mistake we see most. A denser, higher-MERV filter is harder for air to pass through, which raises your system's static pressure (the resistance your blower fights against). Too much of it and you get weaker airflow, longer run times, a strained blower motor, and sometimes a frozen coil. A thin, super-high-MERV 1-inch filter is often the worst offender. How often should you change your filter?
A clogged filter undoes everything a good MERV rating buys you, so stay on a schedule:
- Standard 1-inch fiberglass filters: check monthly, replace about every 30 days.
- 1-inch pleated filters: every 1–3 months (sooner with pets or allergies).
- 4–5-inch high-efficiency media filters: typically every 6–12 months.
- Pets, allergies, or DMV pollen season: change more often — particles load the filter faster.
