How a Heat Pump Works

A heat pump heats and cools your home with one all-electric system — and instead of burning fuel to make heat, it simply moves heat from one place to another. That difference is why a heat pump can deliver several units of heating or cooling for every unit of electricity it draws, and why it's one of the most efficient ways to stay comfortable through a full DMV year.
What is a heat pump?
A heat pump is a single piece of equipment that both heats and cools. In summer it works exactly like an air conditioner — pulling heat out of your home and releasing it outside. In winter it runs in reverse: it pulls heat out of the outdoor air (even cold air holds usable heat) and brings it indoors. One outdoor unit, one indoor unit, year-round comfort — no separate furnace required.
How does a heat pump actually work?
The magic is a refrigerant that boils and condenses at convenient temperatures, plus a part called a reversing valve. As the refrigerant cycles between the indoor and outdoor coils, the compressor pushes it through a loop that absorbs heat in one place and releases it in another. Flip the reversing valve and the whole cycle runs backward — so the same machine that cooled you in July keeps you warm in January.
Modern systems take this further with inverter (variable-speed) compressors that ramp smoothly up and down instead of just switching on and off. That means steadier temperatures, better humidity control through our muggy summers, and lower running costs than older single-stage equipment.
When does a heat pump make sense in the DMV?
A heat pump is often the smart move when you're replacing an aging AC, want one efficient system for heating and cooling, or are chasing the largest rebates and tax credits. It pairs especially well with our climate, and it's the natural choice for additions and older homes through a ductless mini-split. Where heat pumps fall short
A heat pump is only as good as its installation. The common failure modes we're called to fix:
- Wrong size. An oversized or undersized system short-cycles, leaves humidity behind, and wears out early. Correct sizing comes from a Manual J load calculation — not square footage alone.
- No plan for the coldest snaps. Most DMV homes are fine on a heat pump alone, but a dual-fuel setup adds a gas furnace for the few brutally cold days.
- Skipped maintenance. Because a heat pump runs year-round, a dirty filter or low refrigerant charge costs you twice. Regular service keeps it efficient and protects the warranty.
