What Is SEER2?

Updated June 2026 · 4 min read

SEER2 — Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 — is the current rating that tells you how efficiently an air conditioner or heat pump cools over a full season. The higher the SEER2 number, the less electricity the system uses to deliver the same cooling, which generally means lower summer bills. It became the U.S. standard in 2023, replacing the older SEER rating.

What is SEER2, exactly?

SEER2 measures the cooling a system produces over a typical season divided by the energy it uses to produce it. Think of it like a car's MPG: a higher number means more comfort per dollar of electricity. It applies to central air conditioners and the cooling side of heat pumps, and you'll see it on the yellow EnergyGuide label and on every quote for new cooling equipment.

How is SEER2 different from the old SEER?

SEER2 isn't a brand-new idea — it's the same concept measured under tougher, more realistic test conditions. The updated "M1" testing procedure raises the external static pressure equipment is tested against, which better reflects the real-world resistance of actual ductwork. Because the test is harder, a system's SEER2 number comes out slightly lower than its old SEER number would have, even though the equipment itself hasn't changed. So when you compare today's systems to a quote from a few years ago, make sure you're comparing SEER2 to SEER2 — not SEER2 to old SEER.

What does a higher SEER2 mean for my energy bills?

A higher-SEER2 system squeezes more cooling out of every kilowatt, so over a long, humid DMV summer it can meaningfully trim your electricity costs. The size of the savings depends on how much you run the system, your local electricity rate, and what you're upgrading from — replacing a much older, lower-efficiency unit usually shows the biggest drop. We break the numbers down in AC replacement cost in the DMV, and you can see the systems we install on our air conditioning page.

Are there minimum SEER2 requirements?

Yes — the federal government sets minimum SEER2 levels that new equipment must meet, and those minimums vary by U.S. region (the country is split into north and south zones with different rules). The DMV falls under its regional standard, so the equipment a contractor can legally install has to meet or beat that floor. Because the exact minimums and any local rebate thresholds change over time, it's best to confirm the current requirement for your address when you get a quote rather than rely on an old number.

The short version

SEER2 is the current seasonal cooling-efficiency rating — higher means more efficient and lower bills. It uses a tougher test than the old SEER, so numbers run a bit lower; always compare SEER2 to SEER2, and confirm today's regional minimum when you buy.

Does a higher SEER2 always pay off?

Not automatically. Efficiency ratings describe the equipment, but your real-world savings depend just as much on correct sizing, sealed ducts, and a careful install — a high-SEER2 system that's oversized or poorly charged won't deliver its rated efficiency. Very high-SEER2 systems also cost more upfront, so there's a point of diminishing returns depending on how long you'll stay in the home. Efficiency is only one factor, too: if you're choosing between cooling-only and a do-it-all system, start with AC vs. heat pump, and if you're comparing the brands we install, see Trane vs. Mitsubishi.
